Statement Urging Congress to Extend Funding for COVID Response

Dear Honorable Senators Schumer, McConnell, Leahy, Shelby, Burr and Murray, and Honorable Representatives Pelosi, Hoyer, McCarthy, DeLauro, and Granger,

Now is not the time to waver in our response to COVID. As much as we wish for it, the United States is not out of the danger zone of COVID yet. If the United States has learned one lesson from the last two years, it is of vital importance to be ahead of the next variant and next surge.

While COVID cases and deaths are declining in the United States, the country has been here before. In Spring 2020 and May 2021 cases were also declining, only to be followed by surges.  Today, COVID cases are rising in more than half of European countries. It remains unclear why the increase of cases is occurring, but may be because of the increasing spread of the more infectious Omicron BA.2 variant, the loosening of public health restrictions, or waning human immunity. These factors could also lead to increased transmission of the virus here fairly soon.   This portends another surge in the United States, the magnitude and impact of which cannot presently be determined.

Now is not the time to stall additional funding for COVID relief. There is a legitimate need to account for the resources appropriated and spent on COVID to date. We understand that a reasonable accounting has been provided, and a “full accounting” for every program is likely to take months. The country does not have months.

Today, the federal government is rationing monoclonal antibody treatments, reducing state allocations by 30% to stretch supplies as long as possible. By early April there will be no funds to reimburse physicians and others who provide COVID tests and treatments for uninsured patients. By May there will be no funds to purchase Evusheld to prevent or treat COVID in the immunocompromised. By June, funding for the purchase of COVID tests will run out, reducing availability of tests for the fall. If the FDA authorizes a fourth dose of the COVID vaccine for Americans over 65, there will be no money to purchase those vaccines for Americans. Without funding, USAID will have to stop efforts to distribute and administer vaccines in under vaccinated countries, the very countries that are most likely to spawn a new variant. And maybe most importantly, without funds surveillance for new variants, research and purchase of new oral antiviral drugs, and research into next generation COVID vaccines will be halted or dramatically slowed.

We—non-governmental, non-partisan health professionals and researchers—urge you to quickly appropriate the billions necessary for a robust COVID response in 2022, and just as importantly, the development of an infrastructure to more effectively confront future biosecurity and pandemic threats. Fatigue and frustration cannot lead to forgetting what is needed today and to prevent challenges in the future. The United States’ security is at stake. This money should not be subjected to partisanship or legislative maneuvering.

Now, with all that is going on in the world, is the time to invest in the nation’s health, economic well-being, and biosecurity so the country can be better prepared and truly move beyond the COVID emergency.

Letter of Support for Anthony Fauci

A statement from the scientific and public health communities to the American public in support of Dr. Anthony Fauci

Dr. Anthony Fauci has served the USA with wisdom and integrity for nearly 40 years. Through HIV, Ebola, and now COVID, he has unswervingly served the United States guiding the country to very successful outcomes.  He has our unreserved respect and trust as a scientist and a national leader.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Fauci has provided the American political leadership and the public with sagacious counsel in these most difficult of times. His advice has been as well informed as data and the rapidly evolving circumstances allowed. And importantly, he has given his advice with humility, being clear about what we know and what is unknown, but requires judgment.  He has consistently emphasized the importance of mask-wearing, social distancing and vaccination. These are standard and necessary public health measures that we all support.

Scientists can and do express dissenting viewpoints, but a right to an opinion does not mean the opinion is right. We are grateful that Dr. Fauci has consistently stated the science in a way that represents the facts as they emerge, without unwarranted speculation.

Sadly, in these politically polarized times where misinformation contaminates the United States’ response to the pandemic, routine public health measures have become unnecessarily controversial, undermining the effectiveness of our country’s response.

We deplore the personal attacks on Dr. Fauci. The criticism is inaccurate, unscientific, ill-founded in the facts and, increasingly, motivated by partisan politics. It is a distraction from what should be the national focus – working together to finally overcome a pandemic that is killing about 500,000 people a year. We are grateful for Dr. Fauci’s dedication and tireless efforts to help the country through this pandemic and other health crises.
